Having achieved all that is possible in this lifetime, Doctor John Faustus is irrepressibly drawn by the darker forces of the universe to the possibility of living a perfect and omnipotent life, capable of anything his heart desires. However, the cost is the damnation of his eternal soul. Raise a fist as this timeless tale of ambition, temptation, mortality and good vs. evil is presented with heavy metal flare.

Since the inception of the story of Doctor Johan Faustus, a German scholar who allegedly sold his immortal soul to Lucifer, surfaced in the early sixteenth century, the story has spawned countless permutations and variations--stories that still permeate contemporary art, culture and even advertising. But Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus (originally titled The Lamentable Tragedy of Doctor Faustus) is widely regarded as the first significant work to derive from the original legend. Humans will forever strive to wonder what can be achieved in one’s lifetime and at what cost. Despite vastly different cultural measuring sticks, they will forever balance the temptation of what is good versus what is evil. Marlowe’s work captures these sensibilities with glorious blank verse. The connection between the earth world, the underworld and the heavens is a mystery for alltimes and ages and permeate the entire play. In Foothill Theatre Arts’ production of Doctor Faustus, these battles and struggles will be highly enhanced by the contemporary infusion of heavy metal music and style. With its dubious history of being labeled “devil-worship music,” heavy metal has been roundly misinterpreted by non-devotees. While there may exist a miniscule percentage fringe element that are outright proponents of Satan, the music and the images are ultimately meant to be entertainment tickling a darker element human nature. Thus the labels and struggles of good versus evil create a complementary backdrop to setting of Doctor Faustus.
