A Program with a Purpose

The Professional Development program at Foothill is a top college priority. We are facing so many new challenges with technology, accreditation, Generation Z students, returning veterans and more, that we believe it is important to provide new "tools" and resources to support faculty and staff to effectively support student learning.

The program includes funds for conference travel and participation, a robust calendar of workshops and events, and numerous online training opportunities - all designed to support the continuous development of knowledge and skills for the Foothill campus community. Our programs are open to all FHDA district employees.

Reflective Writing Challenge: 7 x 7 x 25

The Professional Development Committee invites you to create a total of 7 pieces of writing, over the span of 7 weeks with 25 sentences or more beginning Week 2 of the 2015 Winter Quarter (January 12th).

The writing must be about teaching, learning, and student success and we will use the internet as a place to write and share the work. Your blogs will be shared on the Professional Development website.

Important Dates
Week 1 (Jan 5): Create blogs & training
Weeks 2-8 Weekly blog posts, 25 sentences minimum

Winter Professional Development Day: Student Retention

The goal of the day is to articulate how everyone on campus can contribute to increasing retention. We will provide a roadmap for how retention gains can be leveraged from college-wide programs to individual actions of staff, administrators and faculty.

Keynote Speaker
Brenda Williams, PhD, Senior Associate Consultant, Noel Levitz

Dr. Williams will share her extensive experience in helping schools promote retention and will articulate how efforts from everyone on campus - staff, administrators and faculty - are all needed to improve retention.

Authentic Assessment

Several faculty members shared how they use authentic assessment in their classes and participants brainstormed and shared ideas on how they might shift their classes to incorporate authentic assessment.

Foothill College Opening Day 2014

Dr. Darla M. Cooper, Director of Research and Evaluation for the Research and Planning Group for the California Community Colleges (RP Group), delivered the keynote speech about the student achievement gap.
