The Foothill College Theatre Arts Department announces auditions for The Assembly-Women, Saturday, March 8, at 10 a.m. or Sunday, March 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Lohman Theatre (Room 8002) at Foothill College.

Performers need only attend one audition session. Roles are available for up to 16 women and up to 8 men. All roles are open, and actors of all ethnicities are encouraged to audition. Cold readings from the script will be assigned. Each performers should bring a headshot and resume, and may prepare an optional one-minute comic monologue. This is a non-equity performance and offers no pay. Foothill College Theatre Arts Instructor Tom Gough, M.F.A., will direct Foothill's production of The Assembly-Women.

Written by Aristophanes, who was considered the "prince of ancient comedy", with translations by Stephen Halliwell, the story whisks audiences back in time to ancient Greece. The women of Athens, led by the concerned female citizen Praxagora, are fed up with the biased, unfair and frankly stupid laws created by the all-male citizen assembly. Disguised as their husbands, the women of Athens infiltrate the assembly proceedings and surreptitiously repeal many of the irrational and unfair laws while initiating a plethora of new laws that accommodate a more level, rational society—laws governing everything from distribution of wealth to sexual allowances. Aristophanes’ knack for satirical ribaldry is screamingly abundant in this forgotten gem from the original master of sophomoric humor.

Callback audition is Saturday, March 15, at 10 a.m. Rehearsal begins April 6. The show runs May 23 through June 8.

Parking Lot 8 provides the best access to the Lohman Theatre. Alternately, and to avoid the stairs, park in Lot 5 and take the five minute, level walk to the theatre.
