Q: Where are the EMT classes held?

A: At Foothill College's Middlefield Campus site in Palo Alto, 4000 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto, California, 94303 (one block north of San Antonio Road).

Q: How long is the EMT Program and when can I start?

A: The EMT Program consists of two classes, EMT 304 and EMT 305.
EMT 304 (part A) classes are offered Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer quarters.
EMT 305 (part B) classes are offered Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer quarters.

Note: Classes may not be taken in the same quarter.  EMT 304 must be taken prior to EMT 305.

Q: When are regular EMT classes held?

A: Regular EMT classes are held in the evenings. Please go to the EMT Course Guide (pdf) for more information.

Q: How much does it cost to complete EMT 304 and 305?

A: EMT 304 is a three unit class. This class has $68 material fees in addition to the standard enrollment fees. Textbooks, supplies and non-resident tuition are additional.

EMT 305 is four units. This class has $15 material fees in addition to the standard enrollment fees. Textbooks, supplies and non-resident tuition are additional.

Q: Do I need to file a special application for the program?

A: No. You only need to apply with the regular college application, meet the prerequisite requirements and register at the appropriate time as listed in the schedule of classes and on this web site.

Q: Is there a prerequisite I need before I enroll?

A: The prerequisites for the EMT program:
  • HLTH 55 or First Responder Course*
    (*defined as the American Red Cross Emergency Response course. In addition, either the American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer card or the American Heart Association CPR for the Health Care Professional card must be obtained). Click here for more information.

Q: When is Health 55 offered and how do I enroll?

A: Health 55 is offered every quarter during the evening, but may also be offered during morning hours.

Q: How can I contact the EMT instructors?

A: The EMT instructors do not have an office or telephone at the Middlefield Campus, but they do have a mailbox. Contact Charlie McKellar, EMT Program Coordinator at (650) 949-6955 if you have questions or to leave a message.

Q: What are the job prospects as an EMT?

A: The availability of jobs can depend on where you apply to (ambulance, hospital, fire station) and the county you apply in. Please check with your local EMS agency for additional information. Their website can be found at: http://www.emsa.ca.gov/ for more information.
